In 1984, actress and singer Jane Birkin sat beside Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London. After hearing that she could not find a bag suited to life as a young mother, Dumas sketched an ideal design—an encounter that gave birth to the Birkin.
